RESIDENTIAL DESIGN MS. SUWANNEE, KHAO YAI
Zen Sanctuary
This residential and meditation retreat is designed with the concept of harmoniously blending Zen-inspired simplicity with the serenity of nature, creating a space that nurtures both physical relaxation and spiritual practice.
Main Concept: Zen Sanctuary
The main concept, “Zen Sanctuary,” centers on crafting an architecture that coexists in harmony with its natural surroundings. The buildings are designed to appear as part of the forest itself, offering a profound sense of escape from the chaos of daily life and inviting one into a realm of true tranquility.
Key Design Features
Elevated Structure: The buildings are raised above the ground on concrete and wooden columns, allowing natural ventilation beneath while minimizing disturbance to the ecosystem. This elevated form gives a floating impression — symbolizing spiritual elevation and detachment from worldly concerns.
Open Architecture: Large glass panels and open balconies connect the interior seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, allowing natural light, fresh air, and scenic views to fill the space — enhancing the meditative atmosphere.
Use of Natural Materials: Wood is used as the primary construction material to create a warm and inviting ambiance, complemented by durable concrete columns that express strength and stability. The combination represents the balance between resilience and gentleness — a core principle of Zen philosophy.
Contemporary Roof Design: The overlapping gable roofs are designed in a simple yet elegant manner, providing protection from the elements while adding architectural depth. The roof form symbolizes simplicity, purity, and calmness — aligning with the spiritual nature of the space.
Meditation and Mindfulness Spaces: Dedicated areas are designed for meditation and Dharma study, featuring open layouts with large glass windows that frame serene views of the surrounding forest. These spaces encourage mindfulness and relaxation, allowing practitioners to feel deeply connected with nature.
